News Rwanda Industry: Rwanda is one of the most affected country by climate change on the African continent
Rwanda exports €100 million worth of tea leaves each year. But the country is also one of the most affected by climate change on the African continent. Since 1970, rising temperatures have altered the rainy seasons that set the pace for Rwandan agriculture. The consequences: torrential rains, floods, landslides and storms. In 2020, 200 people died as a result of natural disasters. The vital tea industry in the Rwandan provinces is also affected. In the north, plantations have been destroyed by floods in recent years. To save the sector, the authorities are encouraging farmers to plant tea at higher altitudes, in areas less affected by the heavy rains. FRANCE 24's Clement di Roma explains.
